Moore’s Law – Reflection of History of Computing Hardware


Moore’s Law is a reflection of the history of computing hardware and the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit that has increased tremendously every two years. This has been named after Gordon E. Moore, the co-founder of the Intel Corporation and Fairchild Semiconductor which in 1965 was defined doubling every year, the quantityof components for each integrated circuit.

It is not guaranteed that computer chips would keep growing smaller and more powerful though it would be getting near to capacity. The most powerful computing machine in the world could also be the most universal – the human brain which can perform computation on a scale which the most advanced super-computers would be unable to match.

The neurons tend to act on millisecond timescales, though slow when they are compared to the fastest processor and fail to activate. What enables the brain to function is parallel computing, the capability of solving problems at the same time with several different parts of the brain and the focus to imitate the brain’s potential to parallel compute is not only the promise of improvement in computing but also recovery from the imminent death of one of the laws in modern history.

Chips’ First Getaway – Apple Newton (1993) 

It is assessed that there are around 1.4 billion smartphones on the planet and though most of the prevalent devices have been designed in California or South Korea, the chips which power them are designed in Cambridge, England.

ARM, the company which is behind it all may not be compared to Intel but their chips are better than their U.S. rival, on energy efficiency as well as size that is crucial for smartphones. Supporting ARM chips is a simplified approach to computing, which was first considered at the University of Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley.

According to professor of computer engineering at the University of Manchester in England, Stephen Fuber, he states that `this is one case of U.S. academic research being taken up by a U.K. company very successfully’. Inevitable Technological Progress

ARM, like all other companies has been dealing with the end of a trend which has provided more powerful computers every two years for almost half a century. The term Moore’s Law represents inevitable technological progress though it is a very explicit observation on computer chips. Gordon Moore, in his seminal 1965 paper, had predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double every 18 months and the cost would fall off at the same rate.

While they are speculating on why transistor density has followed this exponential path, its effect is doubtful. According to professor of complexity economics at the University of Oxford, Doyne Farmer, he states that `it has been a windfall’. The laws of Physics tend to threaten to end that windfall.

 In other words, transistors have to be made from atoms and as the transistors shrink to pack it in a chip, one ultimately reaches a limit where there is shortage of atoms and before running out of atoms, the reliability of tiniest transistors tend to fall while the cost increases due to the increased complexity as well as the difficulty in producing them.

Intel Launches ‘Digital Skills for India’ Programme

World’s renowned US-based Chip maker Intel is going to launch the programme, “Digital Skills for India” with Government of India to digital literate in more than 1,000 panchayats and it is expected that by the end of 2015, this move will impact five million citizens.

As the part of programme 'Digital Skills for India', Intel India has launched a digital skills training application, which includes the modules on digital literacy, healthcare and cleanliness and financial inclusion in five Indian languages. According to Intel officials, that app will be free on Android Play Store from December 6, 2014 in five different languages such as; Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, English, Kannada and Gujarati. Whereas the similar offline training module will be available in seven different Indian languages.

Intel India is also working with BBNL (Bharat Broadband Network Limited) to provide the facility for digital literacy training to key person in the first 1,000 panchayats of India under the NOFN (National Optic Fiber Network) roll-out in India. According to of DeitY (Department of Electronics and Information Technology), R S Sharma, “Digital transformation in India, it’s essential that Government of India and corporate works together to create the sustainable model for the education in digital sector”.

The main aim of this program is to digitally empower the citizens of India. PM, Narendra Modi was stated on Independence Day while addressing the nation, “We will transform the whole country with Rs.1 lakh crore projects and soon country will witness the digitally empowered economy and he asked the private sector to join the government for the success of this vision”.

Intel’s Digital Footprints in India: 


i. In past few decades, Intel has trained more than 18 lakh teachers via; Intel Teach programme.
ii. More than 4,500 faculty 2.35 lakh students in 450 institutes have been impacted with the help of Intel Higher Education programme.
iii. Intel Learn programme has reached more than 1.8 lakh students in India.
iv. In 2012, NDLM (National Digital Literacy Mission) was launched by Intel along with Nasscom.
v. More than 16,000 youth were trained by 400+ volunteers with the help of 10 NDLM partners just in 7 days during Digital Literacy Week in Dec. 2102.
vi. Intel has achieved 100% digital literacy in some villages.
vii. Intel has adopted 3 villages in Andhra Pradesh, Tripura and Rajasthan and set up digital literacy training camps.

Recently, Intel has announced the 'Innovate for India Challenge', to create the solutions that are relevant for the country like India. Earlier, in 2012, US-based firm had launched the same National Digital Literacy Mission and it was able to reached more than 38 lakh Indian citizens.

According to Timothy Q. Parker, GM Asia Pacific Japan and Vice- president of sales and Group of marketing, “As we all aware that India is developing very fast with technological innovations and that why we are strive to provide Indian citizens with computing solutions in affordable cost with easy accessibility”.

Intel Wireless Charging In a Bowl Expected Soon

Everybody’s got attracted to the fact the vendors were announcing long battery life and various strategies for the electronics gadgets. This interested can be easily attributed to the fact that the customers are looking for easiest and less time consuming to keep their mobile gadgets and other smartphones up and running. According to Intel Corporation's CEO, Brian Krzanich, the wireless charging bowl of Intel targeted for devices like smartphones is expected to be available in the market around end of 2014. This was stated in the MakerCon conference in New York. Brian Krzanich was selected as the CEO for the chipmaker in 2013.

Even though this announcement of the charging bowl was around January, this was among the first few ideas of the CEO which was introduced at International Consumer Electronics Show. According to the CEO, the idea of the charging bowl has received overwhelming response from the customers and tech shows and they are being constantly contacted by the customers to get more information about the device release date.

Although the price of the device has not been revealed, but according to the CEO the device will be expected to be launched by the holiday season. Brian also indicated that the company is currently working on number of projects and also gave road maps for the same.

As per the reports many products are at the final stages or have been revealed and some of them already hitting the retail stores.

Brian also disclosed that the concept behind the charging bowl is classic. He stated that he saw some of the employees of Intel sitting at a table and discussing the currently available wearable in the market and how it becomes irritating for them to put a plug to keep the device working and powered up. This led to the basic concept of developing something which can be used to charge the wearable devices without plugging or by throwing it on something.

Earlier this year, it was absolutely clear that Intel was working on something in the coming days which will make the people of the PC environment to enjoy charging as a wireless experience. Intel's senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, Kirk Skaugen was able to demonstrate the process in which the wireless technology can be incorporated in a table which will have the capability to charge a number of devices at the same time. The wireless charging bowl is similar to any normal bowl one can find at home to put keys, loose coins and some other items.

According to Brian, one of the team member stated that she throws her jewelry in bowl once she reaches home. This gave them the idea to convert the chip bowl and make it into a charger. The team went to a nearby Wal-Mart, picked up a chip bowl and manipulated it to make a charger. This idea actually worked.

Two hours boost in PC battery life with Intel's Core M chips

Undeniably, the main attraction of the IFA show is expected to be wearable’s in different forms ranging from head-covering, flashy and round ones. After this one will be able to see a whole new range of 2-in-1 computers, super thin tablets, most of them possibly made by Intel's new low-power Core M chips.

This processor was initially teased by Intel in early summer, in the form of 7.2mm thick tablet. This tablet was thinner when compared to iPad Air. With increasing number of systems to be available in the market based on the same processors, it is the right time for Intel to give details about the capability of this new M chips.

Even though this processors and CPUs are part of the Broadwell family (after the current Haswell line), they are still not meant to replace the standard-voltage fourth-generation Core processors from Intel. These processors are inside most of the high end laptops. These are not expected to be available in the market till next year.

Contrary to the above, Core M is expected to be resultant to the ultra-low-powered "Y series”, which are a specific variant of the Haswell processors. These are already being used in many 2-in-1 PCs. Apart from PCs; this is also meant for 2-in-1 super thin notebooks. Core M promises a faster performance and a long battery life. Now this is first capability expected from a new chip.

The new range of PCs are expected to be more thinner, lighter when compared the previous version as Intel has now moved to 14-nanometer process with Broadwell from 22-nanometer process with Haswell. Even though Intel has already informed that most of the PCs are expected to be measuring around 7mm thick, but people should not be expecting all the devices will be like iPad Air. All this can be attributed to the shrinking size of components. The die size is 37% smaller and the motherboard is now at 25% in size.

As far as power consumption is concerned, as per Intel TDP for PCs will be available in market at 4.5W. As a result of this the users will be able to save 1.7 hours of battery as well as improved local 1080p video playback. These systems are expected to run cooler as compared to earlier systems. According to Intel integrated HD 5300 graphics will show 40% improved performance and 50% of increased CPU performance.

Some of the other features include Wireless Display 5.0 and Intel's Smart Sound technology. These chips are expected to support WiGig wireless docking standard in the near future. More than 20 different models of Core M are about to be unveiled, Lenovo's ThinkPad Helix being the first one. According to Intel the price of these are expected to drop as low as $599 but potential buyers shouldn’t be expecting anything as cheap as this soon.

Intel Explores Wearable Devices for Parkinson's disease Research

Intel is planning to implement wearable gadgets to keep track and monitor patients who are suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The gadgets may include smart watches or smart bands and these gadgets will allow collecting the data of the patients and then this data will be transferred to the researchers and then these researchers will do the analysis accordingly.

They are collaborating with the Michael J. Fox Foundation in order to carry out multiphase research which will include study of the neurodegenerative brain disease. According to study it is estimated that nearly Five million people from all around the world have been analyzed and diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Hence it is said to be second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's. So it’s a serious issue and must be taken care of so this is the reason why Intel took the initiation to make this research.

The preliminary target or goal is to determine the practicability of implementing wearable devices to track patients remotely and store the data which is collected using these in an open system that can be retrieved and used by scientists for further study.

In the next stage of the research and study the foundation will establish funds to monitor how patients are replying or responding to the provided medication. The array of wearable devices will be used to track the patient’s records that will be the part of research.

These wearable smart devices will provide a useful method to keep track of patients from their work or homes, and the best part is that it will also allow people in the most rural parts of the country to get involved in the research. It’s a true fact that people of rural areas don’t have much resource to get involved in such type of research practices because they neither have much money nor they have any knowledge to understand such high projects so they are only concerned with their personal life hence they are not interested in such research. But Intel has always found the technical solution of every problem and this Parkinson’s disease research is the best example of this. So hats off to Intel Corporation.

These wearable gadgets will be provided to almost every patient who is suffering from the Parkinson’s disease. The research will take place in different phases and the details that will be obtained using these smart gadgets will be stored in the system that will be open to scientists for purpose of study. And these results will be analyzed by them and thus without any actual participation of patients the proper output in the form of medication will be discovered.

Now the most interesting part is the wearable devices that will be used. It is estimated that the wearable devices would be designed in such a way that patient or participant may wear it for whole research duration comfortably. It should be light weighted and should look good on wearing. Hence the smart watches are selected as the best device for this. But also it is in the news that they will work with Basis Science which is well known for its wrist band and this wrist band will measure the heart rate of the person wearing this.

So let’s hope that this research will be successful soon because it will help the patients suffering from Parkinson’s to get rid of this disease and live a healthy life.

Intel is the best company known for developing high class processors and certain electronic chips that are used in 90% of laptops and other electronic gadgets. Intel has always tried to develop something different. The i-core processors are the best examples. So Intel has always created interesting stuffs and now it is developing the ear buds that are used in the earphones or headsets. So these ear buds are not same as before but it’s really different as it will detect the user’s heart rates. This news was announced on Friday that Intel is collaborating with rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's SMS Audio to create and develop this amazing smart ear bud that will take care of user’s health by detecting his heart rates.

The SMS Audio BioSport In-Ear Headphones will be having an earhook and this earhook will be driven or powered by the user's phone that is smart phone. The best part about this is that it will not only be water-resistantbut alsosweat-resistant. These smart ear buds will be offered by SMS Audio in Q4. The rate is not yet announced but is expected very soon.

Bill Calder who is one the representative of Intel says that it is really a unique product as compared to other earphones in the market and no batter is required to run it and that’s the biggest punch.

These BioSport earphones will be well-suited and compatible with the fitness application Run keeper for not only android smart phones but also for iPhones. And in future it will also support some other applicatons related to health and fitness. And these ear designed in such a way that it will work with any kind of smart android phones available. It is wired instead of Bluetooth because wired ear bud will not require any kind of power source for its charging.

The earbuds will have infrared optical sensors that will display the pulsing of the skin inside the user's ear. It was designed and developed in this way because it is static inside the ear so additional motion sensors are not at all required. The earbuds also have an accelerometer which will track user’s motion and that corrects for gestures and motions like for example users shaking their heads.

The data will be captured by these earbuds of the headphones and this data will be communicated to user’s smart phone that will show the analysis and processing of motions.

The final decisions have been taken regarding the product design and let’s hope that it will be in the market soon. So this is basically related to the health and people who are really serious about their health analysis then it’s a must buy for them. It’s just the beginning for Intel and they said that they can do much more with their technology and related procurements.

Gartner's Blausays that it looks like a fun device but at the same time it is also very useful product for health conscious people. He also said that the success of this product is based on branding, budgets and how well it works.

Intel's New 800 Gbps MXC Cable Will Speed Up Data Centers

Intel's Silicon Photonics project will be come to the end of reality. Famous for gorilla glass manufacturer Corning will sell the cable, which then allow in a data center bendable connections with up to 800 Gbit / s . Intel's MXC cables are gradually becoming a reality. The Silicon Photonics technology is to be brought in the third quarter of 2014 to the market and sell it according to some media reports.

Upto 300 meter long cables with a data throughput of 800 Gbit/s are possible now with these. To achieve high speeds Intel is by the dozen bundle glass fiber strands into a single cable and reach as per direction 800 Gbit/s output. The bundling of strands in it is nothing special. For a long time, there is the problem of insufficient bandwidth over fiber, so about QSFP was developed as a standard, the switch and server connections with 40 Gbit / s allows using Ethernet, the data direction uses two fibers and also for other standards such as Fiber Channel is used.

The enormously high integration of Intel, however, is something special and should be affordable anyway. Whole 64 fiber connections means Intel is in a small plug. Currently, just 25 Gbit / s per fiber are provided. When calculated the 1.6 Tbit / s that go in full duplex mode over the cable or rather the wiring harness. Intel is already planning to double the bandwidth to 50 Gb/s on each direction and then 1.6 Tbit/s can be reached. A high degree of integration is not only in the cables necessary, but also to the transceiver section. Intel also promises an easy deploy ability.

The cables may be more bent than conventional fiber optic cable. The bending radius is specified with only 7.5 mm. It is part of the field Silicon Photonics and provides a connector with the name MXC.

Intel launches 15-core Xeon E7 v2 with three ring buses

As a series of E7 -4000 Intel offers its new server processors. However, the Xeons are based on the Ivy Bridge architecture and were upgraded primarily by new bus systems and AVX. They are previously codenamed Ivy Bridge -EX processors, Intel now on the series E7 -4000. The entire platform was previously codenamed Ivytown. Commonly is also the name E7 - v2, because these processors are the successor of the 2011 series introduced E7.

As this is also E7 - v2 designed for servers with up to eight sockets in which as many full x86 cores are working in parallel. Even if the model number 4000 suggests a proximity to the Core i 4000 Haswell, the Xeons are always based on the previous desktop architecture. In the case of E7 - v2 is the Ivy Bridge, Intel's first design with 22 nm feature size. By now probably good routine production process had started, the power consumption could remain largely the same and the fastest models are coming with up to 155 watts TDP.

The E- 8880 v2 is also of 15- Kernel, which only needs 130 watts. While Haswell processors are manufactured with various these, Intel has chosen for the Xeon E7 - v2 for only one reason. That is, It can offer three blocks for the L3 cache, each of which is connected to three units with up to five cores. Therefore, there is a flexible option for the number of nuclei is possible. In a study submitted to the Conference ISSCC Intel speaks of "chop options" presentation in their presentation. So they gave the reason for the right block with five cores and L3 cache should not actually be present in up to ten cores. So Intel just needs the manufacture for all new Xeons and can configure the functional cores so that the desired number of cores needed.

Overall, the cache can be large with a fully equipped E7 v2 up to 37.5 Mbytes; an entire new Xeon consists of up to 4.3 billion transistors.

Production costs are also reflected in their price. In the cores themselves, there are the Ivy Bridge design extensions to the instruction sets. Thus, the E7 - v2 now dominated by AVX vector processing, as a new interface, there are PCI Express 3.0 with 32 lanes per socket. That does not sound much, but is also extended by the revised QPI bus, which connects the base. The new QPI 1.1 depending on the model with up to eight GT / s at work.

 In addition, there are now eight per socket instead of four memory channels. The two of them can also be connected together, which effectively corresponds to DDR3 - 2666. As individual channels memory is possible by DDR3 -1600. Both modes are supported by the storage drivers, codenamed Jordan Creek, which have not changed over the older Xeons. Using these blocks can be addressed up to 12 DIMMs per channel, giving a maximum of 48 terabytes of RAM for an eight- socket system with the still rare 64 -gigabyte Registered DIMMs.

The processor can be operated in lockstep mode with enhanced error correction but the faster performance mode with channel bundling is more than in half the RAM. It comes in the configuration of a system with the new Xeons so on the application range in some applications benefit from a lot of memory, other scale better with more cores or cache. Therefore, there is a need for the E7 - v2 in so many varieties, 20 models to choose from.

Because so different application profiles and processors, Intel also specifies different values for the benefit of computing power compared to the previous generation. At least twice as fast -with only 50 % more cores used in the server when as databases or Web applications are running. In highly optimized code with AVX for supercomputers gives a better result of three and a half times up to speed.
